Anteriormente este músico ruso, hijo de un novelista y dramaturgo, se había graduado en la Academia Real de Música de Roma, dirigiendo varias sinfonías europeas. Musicó su primer film en 1934, La mujer de todos (La signora di tutti), dirigida por Max Ophüls y basada en una novela de Salvatore Gotta. Tres años más tarde emigró a los Estados Unidos, dirigiendo las orquestas sinfónicas de Minneapolis y Boston hasta su llegada a Hollywood en 1939.
