De ascendencia polaca, trabajó en sus comienzos como asistente de producción, convirtiéndose más tarde en uno de los principales montadores del estudio Universal. Suyos fueron los recortes de última hora del prestigioso drama de guerra, Sin novedad en el frente (Lewis Milestone, 1930). A partir de 1931 se dedicó a la dirección, debutando con el drama De hombre a hombre, en el que asumió la dirección junto a George Melford.
